The new museum is part of a £6.5m project that will be established at the heart of Taunton's proposed cultural qaurter and has received £4.8m in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A further £1.7m must be raised through grants and public fundraising.
The aim is to create a visitor attraction that will conserve and restore Taunton Castle to tell the story of Somerset from prehistoric times to the present day, and display its history and heritage in exciting new ways.
People can find out about the progress of the project and influence the design of the new museum by visiting a webpage at the Somerset County Council website.
"I hope that people will take the time to have a look and let us know what they think should be in the new museum," said Carrie Blogg, Somerset County Council’s Museum of Somerset Project Manager.
"For example, would people prefer to see more about Glastonbury Tor and would they like to learn about it through short films or reading text? Or do they think the Monmouth Rebellion is very important and want to find out about it through interactive technology?”
As well as allowing people to tell Somerset County Council what they want to see in the museum, the web pages also provide information about how to donate to the Museum of Somerset Fundraising campaign, which has already raised over £80,000 towards the £250,000 target, along with information about Taunton Castle and its part in England’s history.
