Budding artists could see their drawing adorning the side of the Tower of London’s White Tower, as part of a competition launching on Friday October 19 2007.
Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) is inviting the public to interpret the stories of the White Tower, and the winning entry will be realised on scaffolding sheeting on its 27-metre-high and 33-metre-wide east face during cleaning and restoration work taking place in 2008.
William the Conqueror started the iconic tower in 1075 and HRP are looking for a drawing that captures the building’s drama and intrigue and the significance of the stories and history that surround it.
The competition, which HRP have called Hung, Quartered and Drawn!, closes on January 14 2008 and the winner is announced on March 10 after which the drawing will be revealed on the side of the White Tower in late March 2008.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone and everyone to get involved in not only an important piece of conservation but also in an exciting and original way of telling stories,” said Chris Martin, head of development at HRP.
“Hung, Quartered and Drawn! will, we hope, become an added reason to come to the Tower of London and, through attracting sponsorship to the realisation of the winning piece of art, secure vital funding for the conservation of this worldwide icon for London.”
The competition is open to anyone living, studying and working in the UK and UK citizens living and working abroad. Go to the HRP website for details on how to enter (informtion will appear on the site from Friday October 19 2007).
