Salt and Pepper Grinders by Christopher Perry. The Trust is seeking to identify the highest standards of craftsmanship and cutting edge design.

Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust has launched a new, national biennial Metalwork Design Award.

A prize of £10,000 will be given for the best example of bold, brave and innovative metalwork design.

The award is intended to promote, support and celebrate innovation and excellence in craftsmanship for those working with metals.

Launched to coincide with the 10 year anniversary of the Trust, it is intended to emphasise the important role that the production and design of metal has played in both the Trust’s and the City’s heritage.

Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust are custodians of one of the most important collections of decorative and domestic metalwork in the UK. Housed in the award-winning Millennium Galleries, it exemplifies the city’s rich cultural and historical association with metal that dates from the 14th century, as well as cutting edge new designs.

Submissions for the National Metalwork Design Award open on 15 November 2007 and close on 1 February 2008. Twelve finalists will have their work exhibited in the Millennium Galleries next October and the winner will be announced in November 2008.

Yorkshire South Tourism sponsors the award, in partnership with Yorkshire Forward and South Yorkshire Objective.
