EVEL KNIEVEL AND AN AMERICAN DREAM AT CASTLEFIELD GALLERY

“Two men. Two cameras. One car and a pocketful of gas money; a road-trip in to the frail consciousness of a nation obsessed with success.”

No, it’s not Ewan McGregor and his mate, whatever his name is, on their journey towards Cape Town, but an artistic project now on show at the Castlefield Gallery, Manchester.

Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, running until January 27 2008, features the documenting of a journey in the United States by artists Gordon Dalton and S Mark Gubb.

The show has been inspired by Evel Knievel, whose passing away at the end of November was a sad coincidence. After landing in Los Angeles, the two artists set off on a two-week journey towards Snake River Canyon in Idaho – the place where Knievel undertook his failed attempt to jump the gaping chasm.

At the heart of the journey was a search for defining points and a shared cultural history.

The story of this search is told in the exhibition through symbolic photography and text, which also explores the role of the artist as anti-hero, and the pair’s personal relationships with American culture – both today’s American culture and politics and the aspirational, superstar culture of their youth.

In the process, their pilgrimage turns out to be the embodiment of an impossible dream with an inevitable crash down to earth.
