LIVE PAINTING CONSERVATION AT THE LAING GALLERY NEWCASTLE

Visitors to the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle are to have a rare opportunity to watch a specialist conservator working on a painting – live in the gallery.

Mid the Wild Music of the Glen by nineteenth century British artist Neils Lund is a large scale evocation of the changing of the seasons from autumn to winter.

Sadly the ravages of time mean it is now in need of repair and a conservationist will be in the public galleries from Monday February 25 until Friday February 29 and Monday March 3 until Wednesday March 5 2008 to do the necessary work.

“The painting is in need of some specialist work to clean it and remove some varnish from its surface,” explained Laing curator Julie Milne. “This will be carried out in the gallery so visitors can see this delicate and fascinating work taking place.”

Once conserved the painting will go on show as part of the gallery’s current exhibition, Seasons: Paintings from the Laing Collection.
