Artists who have previously undertaken the biennial commission by installing work into Tate Britain's Duveens Sculpture Gallery include Mark Wallinger (2007), Michael Landy (2004), Anya Gallaccio (2002) and Mona Hatoum (2000).
“I am delighted that we can now make our contemporary sculpture commission an annual event, thanks to the generous support of Sotheby’s,” said Stephen Deuchar, Director of Tate Britain.
The next artist to create a site-specific installation for the commission is Martin Creed, who became famous for his 2001 Turner Prize winning ‘Lights Going On and Off’ artwork.
“I am pleased that Martin Creed has accepted Tate Britain’s invitation to create this year’s Commission,” added Mr Deuchar. “Creed is one of the most engaging and thought-provoking contemporary British artists working today.”
“He creates arresting works that often disrupt the norm and I look forward to seeing the new site-specific piece he will create for the Tate Britain Duveens Commission this summer.”
According to reports in today’s Times, Creed will be giving gallery goers the runaround with his next offering, which will feature people running through the gallery at timed intervals.
The Sotheby’s sponsorship will secure the annual installations at Tate Britain for the next three years.
