The enhanced gallery will have a permanent display from its excellent collection, featuring works from the 16th to 19th centuries, plus temporary exhibitions.
“The university has a proud history of involvement in the development of the arts in Leeds,” said Professor Michael Arthur, Vice-Chancellor of the university. “The opening of the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery marks a new chapter in the scale and quality of visual arts at Leeds, and we are tremendously grateful to Audrey for making it possible.”
The university’s art collection includes works by influential sculptor Henry Moore, society portraitist John Singer Sargent and 19th century French landscape painter Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. Other major artists of the 20th century represented in the collection include former Fellowship holders at the university, Terry Frost, Trevor Bell and Kenneth Armitage.
Important Yorkshire artists showcased in the gallery include Patrick Heron, Jacob Kramer, Edward Wadsworth and William Etty.
The first temporary exhibition on show explores British printmaking from 1880 to 1980.
