West Sussex Museums have got together for a Time Travel Trail this summer.

If one museum isn’t enough to keep the kids happy this summer, 18 museums across West Sussex have devised a trail and a Time Travel Quiz that explores the region's Victorian objects held in collections and archives.

Time travellers who manage to answer five questions about objects in these museums could win one of two £50 prizes – equivalent to two years' wages for a Victorian farm worker.

“The objects chosen provide a wonderful insight into the breadth of Victorian life,” says Jeremy Knight, Curator of Horsham Museum, one of the 18 museums taking part.

“They include a wooden fire engine powered by men, a full size working fairground roundabout powered by steam, and a range of ingenious gadgets like the trap for catching eels and the more gruesome one for catching men! The stories behind these objects are fascinating.”

Leaflets for the Time Travel Trail, featuring photographs, descriptions and the questions are available from museums, libraries and other outlets throughout West Sussex now.

The Time Travel Trail runs until the beginning of September.

The museums participating in the promotional campaign created by West Sussex Museums Council (WSMC) are:

Arundel Museum & Heritage Centre – The History Store, Bognor Regis Museum, Burgess Hill Local History Society Heritage Centre, Chichester District Museum, Crawley Museum Society, East Grinstead Museum, Henfield Museum, Hollycombe Steam Collection, Horsham Museum, Hurstpierpoint Museum, Littlehampton Museum, Marlipins Museum, Steyning Museum, Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery and the Victorian West Sussex Website.
