VOUNTEERS DESCEND ON WELWYN ROMAN BATHS FOR A MAJOR CLEAN UP

More than 1,500 Deloitte employees around the UK contributed time and skills to local community organisations as part of the firm’s Community Investment Day.

Volunteers from the St Albans office spent the day gardening and spring-cleaning the museum at the Welwyn Roman Baths in Hertfordshire.

Stuart McCabe, a tax partner who was involved in cleaning the Baths said, “The Community Day was a resounding success. It was really rewarding for the team and I to put something directly back into the local community.”

Staff inside the Baths collected dead beetles, buried among the Roman ruins, and cleaned delicate Roman artefacts. Staff outside mowed the lawn, trimmed trees and painted doors.

Over 1,500 Deloitte employees around the UK set aside their regular work to contribute to local community organisations.

Caroline Rawle, curator at the museum, said: “The work done by Deloitte has made a huge difference to our workplace. The visitors and staff will really benefit from the care and hard work carried out.”

The Welwyn baths are situated in a preservative steel vault, nine metres under the A1 motorway. The baths no longer work, but were once used as a retreat for washing and a centre for social activities.

It was not until the 1960s when the baths were discovered and the site was slowly excavated to unearth what’s on display for visitors today.
