26 young people from across the UK have won a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent their local community in marking the ninetieth anniversary of the end of the First World War on the battlefields of the Western Front.
The Imperial War Museum (IWM), in association with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, will lead the all expenses paid visit to France and Belgium for Armistice, between November 7-12 2008.
The winners were selected as part of the IWM's Their Past Your Future (TPYF) programme, supported by the Big Lottery Fund, which recently ran the competition Away to Remember, for all young people between the ages of 14 and 16 who live in the UK.
To win the entrants were asked to respond to the following questions: What impact did the First World War have on your community? and What do you think about Remembrance now and in the future?
Led by experienced staff from the IWM, competition winners will travel to sites such as Ypres Salient, Arras and the Somme to discover some of the remarkable stories of men and women who experienced life on the Western Front during the First World War.
Winners will also have the opportunity to represent their communities at commemorative events to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the Armistice. The prize includes a weekend at the IWM in London on October 11 and 12 to prepare for the visit.
