GLASGOW POLICE MUSEUM EDGES CLOSER TO A NEW HOME

Police Museum curator Alastair Dinsmor hopes to reach agreement over a new location for his exhibits on Friday

A curator who has been given three weeks to pack up his museum is hopeful of reaching an agreement to find new premises for the collection.

Former police officer Alastair Dinsmor was told to vacate Glasgow Police Museum’s Turnbull Street site, which is home to thousands of uniforms, badges and items of police memorabilia, and move the display into storage by December 8 2009.

But council chiefs have been negotiating with Mr Dinsmor over the future of the popular museum, and the Glasgow Police Heritage Society chairman will meet Glasgow City Council’s Head of Property Management on Friday in an attempt to finalise a suitable new centre for the exhibition.

Mr Dinsmore described locations suggested by the council so far as “fort apache” sites which tourists would be reluctant to visit. “The alternatives they have offered until now are in fact old shops in run down parts of town,” he said. “Hopefully on Friday I will get some assurances of better accommodation.”

Bringing the characters of Britain’s oldest police force to life, since 2001 the museum has attracted more than 50,000 visitors to the District Court buildings, which are being taken over by the new Glasgow and Strathkelvin Justice of the Peace Court.

A spokesperson for the council cited renovation requirements as the reason for the removal notice being served.
