Everyone’s favourite city by the sea has launched its famous Brighton Festival, which runs from May 7 to May 22.

“Once again we have brought together the best in contemporary visual and performing arts from around the UK and the international scene,” boasted Nick Dodds, the festival’s Chief Executive.

This year’s Brighton Festival (the 39th) has an amazing array of emerging and established talent in dance, performance, theatre, music and much, much more.

Of particular interest in the visual arts section are the various exhibitions. Guys N Dolls takes an intriguing look at redefining the antiquated notion of a doll being simply a child’s play thing.

The exhibition seeks to demonstrate the significant impact that dolls have had on fashion, science, art and entertainment. Mannequins, anatomical wax models, ventriloquist dummies and love dolls are all amongst the supposed cultural revolutionaries.

Everything from the surrealist mannequins of Marcel Duchamp to the Resusci-Annie life-saving doll (anyone who has taken a first aid course will be familiar with her unromantic kiss) is on display.

Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are, of course, world famous children’s stories but equally famous are Sir John Tenniel’s iconic illustrations, which vividly brought to life Lewis Carroll’s amazing characters.

Alice is an exhibition set to re-conjure childhood memories with the work of this celebrated illustrator and caricaturist. In conjunction with The City Reads, and marking the 70th anniversary of Penguin Books, the Charleston Gallery is offering a rare opportunity to view the only prints made directly from the original engraved wood blocks.

Memory Sticks is the unusual textile exhibition of Michele Walker. Using quilting techniques as a metaphor for the complex social and personal histories that make up the fabric of our lives, the exhibition will be on show at Fabrica.

Visual artist Nancy Davenport brings a unique perspective on post-1960s Canadian and US architecture in a beguiling multimedia exhibition at the Gardner Arts Centre.

Campus is a stimulating photographic history of universities and colleges. A series of 11 photographs manipulated through collage and digitally, play on continuous a loop illustrating the melancholy aftermath of a bygone era of student revolutions.

From dolls to cartoon drawing, textiles, multimedia and beyond there is a varied visual feast to satisfy all tastes.

Tickets are on sale from March 4, venues and times vary. Please contact the festival box office for further info: 01273 709709.
