The big kid in you might succumb to Jan Niedojadlo’s unusual sculpture exhibition at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. This exhibition, open until April 24, is so interactive that visitors can become part of the show – by crawling inside the exhibits.

Some of the sculptures look like alien pods while others resemble strange plant forms. Anyone with a taste for science fiction will most certainly love the show.

The idea of the exhibition is to encourage visitors to use all their senses when admiring the exhibition. The sculptures engage all of the senses through patterns, textures and lighting effects. If you crawl inside one of the exhibits you will also experience a range of sounds and smells.

“They are fun and stimulating for adults children,” explained Jan, the artist responsible for the unusual show, “I have created environments that encourage a sense of curiosity and adventure in the exploration of art."

“My sculptures appeal directly to the senses – with their smells, textures and sounds and their den-like quality which also appeals to the child inside the adult.”

A competition is also being held at the gallery where visitors are challenged to give the best description of the sculptures.

Tony Adams, marketing officer at the Potteries, said: “They really are worth having a look at. Many displays don’t allow you to touch the object, never mind crawl inside; it really is a fun experience.”

Jan Niedojadlo’s sculptures are made entirely from recycled materials, such as plastics, rubber and foam, that have been discarded. The Nottinghamshire-based artist, who is 40 this year, has exhibited widely throughout the UK and has always tried to convey a responsible approach towards nature and the world’s resources.

This exhibition is a wonderful chance to see Niedojadlo’s giant organic sculptures and a must see for both the young and the young at heart.
