Glaswegians who lived through the Swinging Sixties will have the opportunity to be part of the city’s new Riverside Transport Museum.

The museum is planning a 1960s-themed street at the venue, which is due to open in 2010, and staff want local people to send in family shots showing what they looked like during the decade.

Suitable photos will form a wall-mounted collage in a display about legendary Glasgow clothes designer Marion Donaldson.

Donaldson brought the new styles from Swinging London to Scotland and together with her husband David became a huge success, selling their clothes range to retailers all over Glasgow.

“While we’d particularly love to hear from anyone who has photos related to Marion Donaldson, we’re really keen to speak to people who may have old family snapshots from 1960s Glasgow,” said curator Kate Tansley.

“It might be of them going out dancing, or playing in a band, or driving, or just hanging out. The popularity of the Marion Donaldson label reflects the mood of Glasgow at that time, and hopefully the photographs will help visitors travel back in time to the 1960s.”

Using the photos and a range of Donaldson-related material, the museum will recreate a boutique telling the story of the designer and Glasgow’s fascination with fashion.

Marion Donaldson said: “I think because the fashion boutiques in Glasgow sold so many of our clothes, people thought that we had our own shop. But, in actual fact, this shop display in the new museum will be our first one.”

The Donaldson shop will be set in a street recreating the feel of 1960s Glasgow, building on the popularity of the popular 1930s-themed Kelvin Street at the existing Transport Museum in Kelvin Hall.

If you’ve got photos you think might be suitable from 1960s Glasgow and want to be part of the new museum then call Kate Tansley on 0141 2872720 or email kate.tansley@csglasgow.org before sending them in.
