Stirling Prize for architecture winner, David Chipperfield, has revealed his latest designs for Margate’s Turner Contemporary gallery.

The permanent gallery is planned to be completed for 2010, with the new designs to be submitted for planning permission before the end of 2007.

Chipperfield’s initial designs have now been adapted, taking on input from Kent County Council and members of the public, resulting in a striking complex of buildings with asymmetrical roofs overlooking the sea.

The roofline of the two-storey buildings reflects other architecture in Margate and brings northern light into the first floor galleries. White opaque glass clads the buildings in the new design.

Visitors inside will be able to take in panoramic views out to sea, or look out onto the town and bay from the café.

“We have developed the design following the public meeting in June to take maximum advantage of such a dramatic setting with its extraordinary views,” said Chipperfield about the latest designs.

“Our building will look out to the sea, connect itself to the town and capture the same unique light that inspired Turner.”

The Margate-based Turner Contemporary arts organisation currently presents exhibitions in venues around the town, including Droit House, where the current gallery designs are on show until Januray 27 2008.
