The new service means you can even download a certain detailed part of the V&A's Three Graces to your mobile. The Three Graces, by Antonio Canova, 1814-17 in the V&A's British Galleries. © V&A
Ever wanted to download a perfectly sculpted marble bum to your mobile phone? Now you can do just that because the V&A has offered a leading collection of its images to the digital download portal, Museum on the Go.
The digital gallery comprises more than 100 images - including the aformentioned detail from Canova's Three Graces - carefully selected from the V&A's collections. It includes wallpaper downloads for mobiles featuring its posters, as well as photographs of famous people, fashion and design objects.
Among the famous faces in the photography collection are Rudolph Nureyev, The Beatles and the Queen, whilst a range of digital postcards offer a variety of themes from a Victorian Christmas to Easter cards and poster advertisements.
A selection from the fashion collection is also made available via a series of videos that show 5 - 10 second clips that rotate key objects through 360 degrees on screen.
The V&A say the new initiative is part of its remit of enabling everyone to enjoy its collections via the increased use of its displays, resources and expertise as a resource for learning.
Royalties generated by the collaboration will be used to support the work of the museum.
Museum on the Go was founded in 2006 and is the first portal for the download of digital objects to mobile devices. The V&A joins a number of key European museums and archives on the site - such as the Museo Nazionale Alinari della Fotografia, Florence, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and Das Berliner Lautarchiv.
The portal can be found at www.museumonthego.com or via a mobile phone at the WAP adress: http://motg.mobi
